Supplies

So pretty, I have new pastels. I should re-route this blog to chronicle school supplies. WHY NOT? Enough money goes down that hole, might as well document it.

Cooking in my kitchen is maybe half a step removed from camping. I make edibles by exposed lamplight and to the dulcet tones of a scratchy radio. There is nothing, nothing, not-one-thing, romantic about it.

Today I drove by the Austin Center for Architecture.
Now I know where it is, that's all.

I was going to see this movie, Visual Acoustics, featuring a Q&A with the director on Thursday. But now I have to be at work because ...etc. God.

Let's focus on the positive. On Friday I'll drive on home to That Gilded State and hopefully, if I'm lucky, just sit on my parents' back porch for a week straight. The back porch, and a trip to Whitfield. I've never been? The 1982 thriller The Beast Within was filmed there. A pubescent boy turns into a cicada monster on an unused floor of our state asylum. While patients strolled by. Here's another link: Warning!

The director of The Beast Within said that there were no less than 80 patients in the Whitfield cannibal ward in 1982. He said this last night at a screening of the film for the Alamo's Terror Tuesdays, and I yelled "that is a LIE" from my seat in the audience.

But... It is. Isn't it?

Rehash No. 1

My granny writes me long e-mails and I don't write her back as much as I should.

Moss from their house. Moss moss moss. Wouldn't it be nice to have moss as a floor covering? Except, could you imagine spilling an egg on that? And then stepping in it?

BAD.

GOOD.

Jimmy, Hunter, and Elise moved here a couple of weeks ago. They live in a hip part of town, South Austin, just off of Congress. Their house has a backyard that is brim-full with possibility. Brim, like the fish. Fish, like what fed the 5,000. So you see.

Them moving has been scandalously nice, for me. I forget how comforting it is to say Mississippi and someone know what you're talking about. And that's pretty much all we talk about which is fine. We could sit on the back porch and not even talk but draw outlines of the state on construction paper. That would be fine.

I'm easy.

Touring

I've missed the Modern Homes Tour around Austin. It was yesterday! And yesterday I toured Austin but not what I have been wanting to snoop around. Mainly this house by Cottam Hargrave (Dezeen write-up) and surely a tossing of others and what was I thinking? I'll tell you what I was thinking. I was thinking about cake. All day.

Another tour I'd like to take in the near future is to Dripping Springs, just, um, west of here. But besides the fancy famousBBQ place, I'm not sure where to go. There is a Buddhist temple and the faintest grizzle of that west Texas landscape.

OK FINE. I'll do it.

Intrigue at Formosa

Here today are a couple of photos from the Elizabet Ney Museum in Hyde Park, in Austin. Ney was a smartie, a foreigner, a sculptor. When it's warm and when they've finished remodeling I will venture inside.

See future post.

"In 1870 they moved to the United States and in 1872 to Texas, which they liked for its vastness and its high regard for freedom." A touch of romance in an otherwise dutiful landmark sign!

Making eyes with west Texas.
